On his tour of the main mining projects in the south of the Republic of Mongolia, Sükhbaataryn Batbold, prime minister, stopped at AREVA's exploration site at Dulaan Uul on August 25th, 2010.

During his visit, the teams presented the Group's mining activities in the region as well as the progress being made in environmental and social projects. The delegation made up of ministers, parliament members and governors also got a look at the In Situ Recovery (ISR)^* technology that the Group will begin testing in October 2010.

Commerce Secretary Gary Locke Meets with Mongolia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Sukhbaatar Batold

U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke hosted a meeting with Mongolia's Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Sukhbaatar Batbold at the Commerce Department today. This was the first meeting between Minister Batbold and Secretary Locke.

Secretary Locke and Minister Batbold pledged to continue to develop U.S.-Mongolian trade and economic relations.

"The Commerce Department looks forward to working with Mongolia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade to further strengthen our commercial ties," Secretary Locke said.

Secretary Locke and Minister Batbold discussed the importance of the Fourth U.S.-Mongolia Business Forum, which will be held at the U.S. Department of Commerce tomorrow, and will focus on the energy sector, including coal mining and production, renewable energy, oil and gas, and nuclear energy.

"We are pleased that the Forum tomorrow will bring together more than 100 American and Mongolian business officials to explore potential business prospects and pave the way for future partnerships," Secretary Locke said.

The Forum is co-sponsored by the U.S. Department of Commerce, Mongolia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy, the Foreign Investment and Foreign Trade Agency, the Trade and Development Bank, and the Mongolian Embassy.

UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum received Prime Minister Batbold Sukhbaatar of Mongolia and his accompanying delegation at Dubai Ruler's Court this morning, in the presence of Dubai Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

After welcoming the prime minister, Sheikh Mohammed expressed his confidence that Sukhbaatar's visit would bear fruit and boost the friendly relations between their countries and peoples.

TOKYO —

Prime Minister Naoto Kan on Saturday agreed with Mongolian Prime Minister Sukhbaatar Batbold to cooperate in promoting development projects of rare earth mineral mines in Mongolia, Japanese officials said. ‘‘Mongolia has high potential in mineral material development and this will serve the two countries’ national interests,’’ Kan was quoted as saying at a meeting with his Mongolian counterpart.

Batbold said Mongolia will be able to produce value-added products by introducing Japan’s advanced technology, according to the officials. Senior officials from major Japanese trading houses and other Japanese firms also joined the meeting. Batbold is visiting Tokyo to attend Sunday’s retirement ceremony for Mongolian former yokozuna Asashoryu, who left sumo in February.

Prime ministers and foreign ministers of South Korea and Mongolia held talks here Thursday, discussing how to improve their economic ties and better cooperate in easing tensions on the peninsula, the Seoul government said.

Meeting with his South Korean counterpart Kim Hwang-sik, Mongolian Prime Minister Sukhbaatar Batbold expressed “solid support” about Seoul’s planned investment in developing mineral resources in his country and agreed on taking active measures to expand economic cooperation.

In a joint press release, the two countries also agreed to positively consider forging a free trade deal, expand cooperation on education, construction, energy, farming and green growth, and increase cultural exchanges.

Q: The Government’s proposal on shared exploitation of the Tavan Tolgoi Mine was rejected by the Parliament. Will it affect negotiations with investors? Batbold: We discussed this matter carefully from all angles. The Government has made its decision in conjunction with the National Security Council, all related working groups appointed by the Parliament and its Standing Committees, as well with concerned experts and scholars. The most important thing is to get things started and the Government plans to commence initial operation this year. A number of issues remain open for discussion by the parliament’s autumn session including the compliance with international standards in building and the utilization of plants, roads and infrastructure facilities, based on the Tavan Tolgoi Mine. The creation of jobs for Mongolians and prioritization of domestic products in the supply of the mine through coordination of the project implementation with the national policy on domestic production support, the transit transportation, pre-conditions, pre-payment and the employment of border checkpoints. Q: When the state-owned “Erdenes Tavan Tolgoi” company will commence its operation? Batbold: While the Parliament is on break until autumn, we (the ministers) still have a great deal of work to complete before the start of the parliament’s autumn session. The Erdenes Tavan Tolgoi operation is scheduled to begin before the end of this year. Q: The Parliament has adopted many important documents concerning socio-economic development of the country. One of them is the State Policy on Railway. How do you expect the role of this document in intensifying our national economy? Batbold: This session of Parliament made many decisions on economic issues which are critical for development. Now we have a legal environment in place to build a railroad network to link economic development hubs in a systematic manner. The above State Policy on Railroad includes the issue concerning direct export of domestic products. Q: When the building of railroad ‘Tavan Tolgoi- Sainshand-Baruun Urt-Choibalsan’ commence? Batbold: It must happen before the end of the year. Associated ministries and agencies are currently in preparation. New railroad project require an enormous amount of funding and the Government current focus is on raising funds for initial implementation. The eastern route of the railroad is supposed to reach seaports. Thus, the Government supports any initiative to cooperate with our neighbors, South Korea and other countries under this project. Negotiations are currently underway.

Mongolia and Kuwait issued a joint statement on January 6, 2011 in Kuwait City after an official visit of the Mongolia's Prime Minister S.Batbold paid to Kuwait.
The Prime Minister of Mongolia S.Batbold paid the official visit to Kuwait in January 4-6, 2011, at an invitation of Sheikh Sabah IV Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the Emir of Kuwait.
During the visit, the Mongolia's Premier S.Batbold; and the Kuwaiti Emir Sabah IV Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah have held negotiations. In addition to it, the Premier S.Batbold has been received by the Kuwaiti Emir; and Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the Crown Prince of Kuwait. He also has met with Jassem Al-Kharafi, the Speaker of the National Assembly of Kuwait.

Working visit of S.Batbold, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade to USA started yesterday from the city of Washington. On the 8th of June he had an official meeting with Gary Locke, Commerce Secretary of the United States and discussed about issues of developing relations in trade and economic sectors of the two countries. “The Commerce Department looks forward to working with Mongolia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade to further strengthen our commercial ties,” Secretary Gary Locke said.
